Motorola Solutions (Schaumburg, IL) has unveiled its fifth-generation MC18 Personal Shopper. A new, larger, all-touch, four-inch, high-resolution display provides easier viewing and pinch-and-zoom navigation, while an advanced imaging engine with omni-directional capacity accommodates 1D/2D barcodes on paper or screen. In addition, the MC18 furnishes Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) technology and "PowerPrecision+" battery with nine hours of continuous use and advanced state-of-health measurements. Finally, the space-saving cradle design may be configured in three ways to meet needs of the store floor and back room. "The MC18 Personal Shopper can help retailers minimize shoppers' frustration with long lines at checkout, and more efficiently deploy staff to focus on customer service tasks--helping boost customer satisfaction, basket size, and sales," reflected Joe White, VP of Enterprise Mobile Computing for Motorola Solutions.

IPTran Meets iPad

Two leaders in payment technology, Datacap Systems (Chalfont, PA) and WorldPay US (Atlanta), have collaborated to address tablet-based POS. Specifically, Datacap's IPTran LT Mobile, offered as Software-as-a-Service by WorldPay, will furnish access to virtually all payment processors as well as integration with necessary POS peripherals such as cash drawers, receipt printers, pole displays, card readers, and PIN Pads. As an added benefit, this solution carries out-of-scope status for PA-DSS.

"Now that the IPTran LT Mobile is available via WorldPay's existing Product Usage Program with Datacap, tablet-based POS integration partners can not only obtain the solution at no cost, but also earn recurring revenue via residual profit-sharing," noted Justin Zeigler, Marketing Director for Datacap Systems. "It's a perfect opportunity for ISVs to implement an attractive recurring revenue stream without taking on the risk associated with the bulk of existing 'SaaS' programs." Back in the day, many RRN.Com readers may remember, Datacap Systems was one of the very few companies recognizing the power of "integrated payments."

An early adopter, LinkPOS (Holladay, UT) recently installed Datacap's IPTran LT Mobile with processing through WorldPay for chain Pizzeria Limone. "IPTran LT Mobile provided instant payment processor and peripheral support to LinkPOS, allowing us to tailor each installation to the specific requirements of our customers," testified Steve Walter, CEO of LinkPOS (formerly Olympus POS). "Because WorldPay provided the IPTran LT Mobile at no cost to LinkPOS, we were able to pass those savings along to the customer and win the account--all while earning on-going residuals."

Training Day at Harbortouch

Harbortouch continues to move ahead, with the official opening of its new 9,000-square-foot training facility in the Allentown, Pennsylvania, corporate headquarters. In conversation with RRN.Com, Brian Jones, EVP of Sales and Marketing, and Sean Berg, National Sales Trainer, emphasized their continuing interest in education and certification for POS. Along those lines, its new training center will host a wide range of coursework for its sales partners, employees, and even merchant customers.

This new training facility houses two classrooms and private offices, Jones told RRN.Com. As expected, elements such as state-of-the art work benches, display systems, wireless networking, and technical laboratory are featured. All part and parcel of the company's move to its Certified Harbortouch Reseller (CHR) Program, which enables sales partners to obtain higher residual splits, additional revenue opportunities, and faster turnaround times on new orders, as well as training. Moving beyond simple one-day curriculum, Harbortouch now stresses its week-long Silver CHR, which deep-dives into vertical markets and the nature of POS. There is no charge for resellers.

First up, hospitality. "Advanced print routing comes into play in this case," Berg suggested to RRN.Com. "They might have a 'hot' kitchen or 'cold' kitchen, or even a bar environment in which you have a service printer. How do you configure that to just take drinks when the server sends it, not when the bartender sends it? Customization details like that, as well as trouble-shooting and vendor-agnostic programming of POS." Beyond CHR Silver, Harbortouch has CHR Gold and CHR Platinum Levels.

DPM Deciphered by Code

Code Corporation (Salt Lake City, UT) has presented its industrial-grade Code Reader 6000 for Direct Part Mark. It employs the company's latest imager (1.2-megapixel CMOS with 1280x960 gray scale) to deliver consistent first-pass read rates of dot peen and laser-etched barcodes, regardless of surface type. With advanced illumination control, patented anti-glare technology, and proprietary decoding platform, CR6000 excels in reading low-contrast, color, reduced size, or damaged barcodes, according to the vendor.

In ergonomic format, measuring 6 in. (H) x 3.7 in. (D) x 2.1 in. (W) and weighing 4.6 oz., CR6000 has 32-MB RAM, 128-MB Flash ROM, and RS-232 and USB 2.0. A blue targeting bar and feedback via programmable LED, audible tone, and vibrating good read functionality facilitate operation. It carries an IP-54 rating for water and dust and withstands multiple drops to concrete of 1.8 m/6 ft. Code offers its five-year warranty, its CortexTools software configuration utility, and data editing with JavaScript (additional license required).

"The CR6000 is an extraordinary opportunity for Code to create a more efficient approach for manufacturers to monitor their inventory and processes," commented Garrett Russell, VP of Sales and Marketing for Code Corporation. "The CR6000 is an important addition to our product line and reflects our commitment to providing barcode reading technology that addresses the data collection challenges in the manufacturing environment." Code showed the CR6000 at this week's MD&M East Show in New York.

More "M" for AMT

AMT Datasouth Corp. (Camarillo, CA) has debuted its new pair of mobile thermal printers, designated Fastmark M3 and M4. Both feature 203-dpi resolution and print speed of four inch/second, with USB and Bluetooth or USB and Wi-Fi (and optional RS-232). Interestingly, the vendor has emphasized its proprietary printing language, dubbed PAL, with ready compatibility with legacy systems, as well as TSPL-EZ (EPL and ZPL, i.e., Eltron and Zebra).

Measuring 5.8 in. (H) x 2.8 in. (D) x 4.6 (W), and weighing 1.2 lbs., Fastmark M3 provides three-inch print width, naturally, and maximum print length of 90 inches. With four-inch print width, Fastmark M4 measures 7.5 in. (H) x 3.1 in. (D) x 6.3 in. (W), and weighs 2.4 lbs., with maximum print length of 90 inches. Fastmark M3 has 32-bit RISC CPU, 4-MB Flash, and 8-MB SDRAM, while Fastmark 4 has 32-bit RISC CPU, 16-MB Flash, and 32-MB SDRAM. It also offers Micro-SD and optional LCD.

As leading characteristics of both models, AMT Datasouth pointed to easy media loading via clamshell design, rubber over-mold construction, two-cell Li-Ion battery with 12-hour life, and optional vehicle adapter. Each enclosure features three buttons (On/Off, Feed, Cover Release), two color LEDs for printer status, and three LEDs for battery status. New RRN.Com readers may be surprised to learn that AMT Datasouth has been selling through VARs, as well as OEMs, since 1983.

CERTIFICATION

An Auto-Star Guides Magellan

Auto-Star Compusystems (Medicine Hat, AB, Canada) has certified its retail management software for independent grocers with the Magellan 9800i scanner/scale by Datalogic (Eugene, OR). Together, Star-Plus and Magellan 9800i offer numerous operational benefits, according to the two parties. This includes increased check-out speed with good-read audio and visual confirmation, enhanced customer experience with top-down reader for mobile couponing, and easy set-up and remote management.

"Auto-Star is excited to integrate Star-Plus with the Datalogic Magellan 9800i scanner/scale," remarked Robert Symmonds, CEO/President at Auto-Star. "Datalogic has proven over the years to provide some of the most innovative and reliable products available to retailers. The Magellan 9800i scanner/scale's ability to accept mobile coupons and loyalty cards is an ideal platform to engage customers, and improve customer loyalty, while increasing efficiency."

Debuted at the beginning of 2013, Magellan 9800i was the first countertop barcode scanner driven completely by high-performance digital imaging, reading both one and two-dimensional symbologies without requiring careful item orientation by the cashier. With aluminum construction, and low bonnet height for accessibility and flexibility in check-stand layout, Magellan 9800i also features clever infrared boundaries on its scale to ensure accurate weighing of produce. If any part of an item extends beyond the area of the scale, this feature, dubbed "Scale Sentry," notifies the cashier for repositioning. It also furnishes large scale platter, entitled "All-Weighs," top-side service port, and so-called "Illumix" intelligent illumination technology.

ID TECH: Visa Says Viva

Visa's Ready Program has approved two mobile magnetic-stripe readers from ID TECH (Cypress, CA), the Shuttle and UniMag II. With two-track, single-swipe reading in either direction, both models accommodate credit, debit, gift, and loyalty cards, in addition to driver's licenses and ID badges. They provide TDES and AES encryption using DUKPT key management.

In small dongle format, about two inches long, Shuttle and UniMag II plug into the mobile device's audio headphone jack. Apple, Android, and Windows devices from various vendors are supported by one or another of the two models. Additional benefits include low battery consumption with no need for external power supply, bi-directional communication between reader and mobile device, and extended phone jack compatibility with various phone cases.

"We are proud to provide secure card reading devices that meet the requirements of the Visa Ready Program," proclaimed Bill Rorick, VP of Product Management and Marketing for ID TECH. "I believe that the approval of these devices by Visa combined with ID TECH's reputation for safe and secure devices provides end-users with the confidence they require when seeking their secure Mobile POS solution."

UniteU (Pittsford, NY) has released its upgraded uMobile POS, encompassing hardware, mobile app, and omni-channel commerce platform. This new offering gives retailers the line-busting features of Mobile POS while fully integrating with existing inventory, accounting, POS, and ERP, according to this ISV. Specifically, it ties into major retail platforms such as Epicor, NetSuite, Retail Pro, Microsoft Dynamics AX and RMS, JDA, and NCR CounterPoint. Earlier this year, UniteU announced its bi-directional integration with online shopping platform Magento. When the consumer wants to purchase an item that's not in-stock, the sales associate can find the item online, or at another location, and add it to the shopping cart, then process both transactions at once. UniteU customer City Sports recently deployed uMobile POS at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo during the Boston Marathon. "Although there has been recent expansion of Mobile POS offerings, retailers have really struggled with such stand-alone M-POS solutions because the accounting, inventory management, and shipping features end up being disparate," indicated Soumen Das, Founder of UniteU. "Retailers are then left to figure out how to align the M-POS processing information with other systems. [With uMobile POS] endless aisle capability increases sales and improves the consumer experience. Instead of leaving the store without purchasing the item they were looking for, it's now being shipped to their home." As payment partners, UniteU includes CyberSource, PayPal, and Shift4.

Time to Reconcile at Sage

Sage North America (Irvine, CA) has offered its new Sage Exchange Payment Management System for the SMB. It enables merchants to easily monitor and control payments from all their sales environments--web, phone, mobile, or storefront--according to the vendor. This consolidated activity and information can be accessed and administered online from any computer, using one user name and password.

"We used to connect our website to Sage for processing and rely on the Sage Virtual Terminal to pull reports and collect payments against orders," recounted Steve Brown, Founder of Zephyr Hardware (Columbia, MD), supplier of Mobile POS. "To access reports, we needed separate log-in information to get to that separate website. Now, with Sage Exchange, everything is resolved under one umbrella. which saves us a lot of time and is huge for our small but rapidly growing company."

Via real-time posting of credit and gift cards, mobile payments, and checks, merchants will receive better control of their cash flow. Sage Exchange also allows businesses to connect their accounting or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software from Sage with their payment devices for automated reconciliation of payment activity, plus access to the Sage support group or self-service portal. "Sage Exchange allows us to combine our twenty Merchant IDs into one place, and we can go from the dashboard to the virtual terminal and do all the batch reporting in one place," explained Crystal Lowrance, Accounting Manager for Scottco (Amarillo, TX), an end-user HVAC firm.

Free the RFID!

Omni-ID (Rochester, NY) has announced support for IEEE 802.15.4f-2012 to promote open standards for active RFID in asset tracking and real-time location systems (RTLS). Simultaneously, Omni-ID has launched its supporting Power 415 Tag, described as the first combination of such UHF passive/active RFID. As participating partner, GuardRFID (Delta, BC, Canada) will supply its RFID Reader. Unlike passive RFID, such as EPC Gen 2, active RFID has remained mainly in the proprietary realm, according to Omni-ID.

Targeted at outdoor environments, Power 415 allows standard 96-bit encodings--once again, EPC Gen 2--to be commissioned through standard passive readers and broadcast across the active network. GS1 encoding formats such as GIAI (Global Individual Asset Identifier) or GRAI (Global Returnable Asset Identifier) and several others are supported. This provides the capacity to create systems that encompass barcodes as well as both formats of RFID. Additionally, combination of passive and active extends reading if the tag's battery fails.

"As we worked through research and discussions with industry groups and key end-users, IEEE 802.15.4f emerged as a clear winner in providing both an opportunity for utilizing an open standard with no licensing fees or legacy encumbrances, and the technical performance," suggested Ed Nabrotzky, EVP of Sales and Product Development at Omni-ID. "We are convinced that this standard provides the best basis for encouraging innovation and product interoperability in industrial active RFID going forward. At the end of the day, customers will be better served and no longer be tied to one provider--they will have choice."

Foursome Plays POS at PGA

A recent PGA 2014 Memorial Tournament, hosted by Jack Nicklaus in Ohio, showcased tablet-based POS provided by four prominent players in our channel: APG Cash Drawer (Minneapolis, MN), Epson America (Long Beach, CA), Lavu, Inc. (Albuquerque, NM), and VAR Culinetwork (Fairfield, OH). At this event, held at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, twenty POS stations were deployed to serve about 30,000 people daily from May 26 to June 1. This new-age system addressed concessions, with menu management, order taking, mobile payment processing, and back-of-house functions.

In addition to Lavu's iPad-based POS, hardware deployed included APG's Stratis Integration System of Tablet Holder and Cash Drawer and Epson's OmniLink TM-T88v-i Receipt Printer. With successful performance, the potential of tablet-based POS and "smart technology" was demonstrated to an influential audience, according to participants. Culinetwork CEO Josh Green stated he was able to "train the wait-staff in about an hour, and then show senior management all the back-end tools like sales reports, inventory management, and customer database."

"Emergence of tablet-based systems is allowing businesses like the PGA to install state-of-the-art POS," enthused Mark Olson, President of APG Cash Drawer. "The POS solutions at this event were innovative and helped create a seamless checkout experience regardless of the location, whether Souvenir Tent, Pro Shop, or Club House. There is a viable need to tender all forms of payment--even on the golf course."

Agilysys Takes the Plunge

When opened next spring, the new Camelback Lodge & Indoor Waterpark will deploy an extensive hospitality software suite from Agilysys, Inc. (Alpharetta, GA). Located in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, the Camelback complex will cost $103 million, with hotel, restaurants, spa, meeting space, multiple pools and slides, and climbing and mini-golf courses. It will implement each of the following solutions: property management (Agilysys Visual One PMS), point-of-sale (Agilysys InfoGenesis), mobility (Agilysys Mobile), inventory and procurement (Agilysys Eatec), and document management (Agilysys DataMagine).

"When selecting technology for our new property, we knew we needed software systems that could handle an extremely busy and complex operation," relayed Ryan Klongland, Director of Revenue at Camelback Lodge & Indoor Waterpark. "Agilysys solutions are proven, scalable, and easy to integrate with other applications we are using. We also appreciate the partnership approach the company has taken and the high level of personal attention we have received. We are looking forward to the opportunities the technology will give us to build our business and deliver exceptional guest service."

"Properties that want to thrive in a competitive environment must implement technology that not only strengthens operations but also creates lasting connections with guests," corroborated Tony Ross, VP of Sales at Agilysys. "With the selection of our comprehensive software suite, including our mobile point-of-sale solution, Camelback Lodge is making a major commitment to efficiency and guest service. Each of these solutions is powerful on its own; together, they offer a complete package for managing a multi-faceted enterprise such as Camelback."

Total Recall for Wholesalers

Associated Grocers of Florida, one of the major regional wholesale food distributors, will implement recall process management technology from Recall InfoLink (Boise, ID). In so doing, it joins fellow members of Retailer Owned Food Distributors & Associates (ROFDA), including Affiliated Foods of Amarillo, Associated Grocers-Baton Rouge, Olean Wholesale Grocers, and Associated Grocers of the South. A patented, web-based platform, Recall InfoLink protects brand image and reduces liability, according to its developer, while providing standardized messaging, inventory tracking, and reporting for compliance efforts.

"Recall InfoLink is easy to use and provides seamless distribution to all of our members and customers through multiple communication channels," reported Gregg Young, SVP of Sales and Procurement at Associated Grocers of Florida, which is based in Pompano Beach. "We view the system as central to our overall food and product safety efforts, which are focused on keeping both our retailers and their customers safe and informed." Established in 1962, ROFDA has 14 member companies spread evenly throughout the U.S., serving more than 10,000 retail outlets with $44 billion in annual revenue.

"Associated Grocers of Florida will see dramatic process improvement and have better piece of mind in this critical part of the business as a result of implementing our solution," predicted Roger Hancock, President and Founder of Recall InfoLink. "What is more important is that their retail members and other customers will have access to a better recall technology than many of their chain competitors." Last year, Recall InfoLink announced its joint marketing agreement with ReposiTrak (Salt Lake City, UT), the joint venture between Park City Group and Leavitt Partners.

Small business in the U.S. added 35,000 jobs in May, the largest monthly increase in more than one year, and triple the recent average of 12,000. Since the beginning of the recovery in March 2010, 575,000 jobs have been created by the SMB. Further, employees worked longer hours and made more money in May, according to this source, the Small Business Employment and Revenue Indexes by Intuit. Average monthly hours worked by hourly employees increased from April to May by 0.8%, which equates to 48 minutes. Overall, small business employees worked an average of 112.3 hours in May, with the hourly wage remaining unchanged at $15.90 for the fourth consecutive month. As the result of longer hours, employees' average monthly compensation grew by 0.6%, an increase of $17 from April. (Equivalent yearly wages would be approximately $33,600.) Among the 39 states tracked by Intuit, only Michigan declined in small business employment. Nevada reported the highest increase in employment at 0.5%, followed by Hawaii and Oregon at 0.4%, with Alabama, California, Idaho, Mississippi, Texas, and Utah at 0.3%. "In addition to the impressive increase of jobs this month, the hiring rate is also at the highest level we've seen since early 2009," observed Susan Woodward, Intuit's Economist. "This increase in small business activity could be credited to the spike in home building. Housing starts grew from 947,000 units in March to 1,072,000 units in April, an increase of about 13%."

Second Stage for Schmidt

It appears Mark Schmidt has left our industry. Well-known by RRN.Com readers, Schmidt spent almost twenty years as VP of Product Management and Marketing for Metrologic, followed by three years as VP of Business Development at Honeywell Scanning & Mobility (following that example of consolidation). Lately, he served as COO of another scanner vendor, KoamTac, Inc. According to his web profile page, Schmidt now serves as VP of Marketing and Product Development for ScentAir (Charlotte, NC), which addresses the use of aromas in business environments.
